Circular Economy & Sustainability

The Circular Economy is a very important part of the Castlebar Tidy Towns campaign, and we put a lot of effort into promoting it locally. For us, it is all about changing attitudes and behaviours so that people think about how they can reuse, refurbish, repair, recycle and upcycle in everyday life. Over the years we have run many projects to highlight this message – our Keep Cup campaign, recycled Christmas decorations and the installation of water points to reduce plastic bottles are just a few examples. We want to make people stop and think about how the small changes they make can add up to a much bigger impact on our environment and community.

We have also taken on practical projects that show how the Circular Economy can work in real life. A good example was our partnership with Castlebar Golf Club where we upcycled old golf carts into litter trolleys for our volunteers. What could easily have ended up as waste was instead turned into something useful that is still in service today. Supporters of Castlebar Tidy Towns will also know that we hold promotional events throughout the year, including WEEE recycling days and awareness campaigns on food waste. These are all about encouraging people to get involved, do their bit, and help us create a culture of reuse and sustainability in Castlebar.

The Deposit Return Scheme is an important step in supporting the circular economy and sustainability by encouraging people to recycle plastic bottles and tin cans rather than sending them to waste. Castlebar Tidy Towns were proud to be one of the first in the country to link this initiative with Cancer Care West and Castlebar Tennis Club, with proceeds from returns going to a much-loved charity and to help rebuild the Tennis Dome badly damaged in recent storms. We also greatly acknowledge the generous sponsorship of McGrath Waste Management, who provided bins at the Tennis Club for use by members and the wider public. This is a project where everyone wins – the environment, the community, and two very worthy causes – and we encourage everyone to keep supporting it.
